With this year’s theme focused on Respect between Cyclists and other road users, here are a few other respectful tips from Metasport’s Head Coach Dillon Wood, which will help keep you safe and accident free on the roads of Singapore.
While it’s tempting to roll through red lights, bike up the sidewalks and take a short cut up a one way street the wrong way - it is dangerous! - and gives the wrong impression to other road users. Abide by the Rules of the Road and you will steer clear of self-inflicted trouble and accidents!
Singapore has the dubious reputation of designing its storm drain covers to be exactly the same width as a bicycle tire – in fact some of them could swallow an F1 tire they’re so wide! Avoid riding in the gutters at all costs, to avoid flying over the handlebars accompanied by an expensive crunching sound! Also, with the recent rain, watch for potholes in the roads as well as the omnipresent construction debris including cement truck spills!
Wet weather turns otherwise safe road conditions into very dangerous surfaces for smooth thin bike tires. In particular manhole covers and the large steel construction plates can have you skating around on the ground in no time! Even the paint on pedestrian crossings and road markings are enough to skid your tires out from under you. Anticipate these dangers and take safe avoiding action if you can. If they are unavoidable, stay as upright as you can and on no account hit the brakes when you are anywhere near them.
If you are hit by a car – it’s going to hurt – probably a lot! If you are hit by a bus or a truck it’s probably going to kill you. Early morning when we all ride because the roads are quiet, are the times we are most likely to have an accident… mainly because we (and the taxi, bus and truck drivers) haven’t had our kopi and our attention may be distracted! So make sure you are lit up like a Christmas Tree! - lights front and rear should be visible from 200m. Also be super vigilant when approaching intersections - there’s very little point in arguing that ‘the light was green’ when you are doing it from a hospital bed!
I’ve had many people complain to me that the standard of driving in Singapore is terrible. I disagree. I have only ever witnessed courtesy and certainly not an ‘anti cyclist’ attitude. In fact as I ride a mountain bike in town every day, I would single out Singapore Transit and SMRT bus drivers as being some of the most courteous and respectful in town!... and when they slow down and give me space, I give them a respectful wave to say thanks!
Don’t just chuck you bike in the garage until next Sunday when you get it home from a ride… give it some TLC first and then say hello to the wife! Cleaning the frame and wheels particularly after a wet outing will keep it nice and shiny. Cleaning and oiling the chain and derailleur will keep you running nice and smooth. Cleaning and oiling the brake levers and calipers will keep you nice and safe! A lot of routine maintenance is easy to do yourself… and for more major work and advice drop down to the guys at BikeHaus on Bukit Timah Road for a great service!
Ok so I know it’s fun to pretend you’re in Le Tour and jump on the back of a group as it speeds past you - but if you don’t know how to ride in a group… then don’t! Group riding takes skill, experience, great bike control and a finely attuned sense of anticipation. If you get onto the back of a group and cross another rider’s wheel, you are more than likely the one who is going to crash. If you do that further up the pace line, you will bring down all the riders behind you and although that might hurt, it is nothing compared to the pasting you will get from the other guys for wrecking their $5000+ bikes! So be safe! And join a group like MetaSport who can show you how to have fun on group rides… safely!
I know ‘Help Other Cyclists’ sounds obvious and frankly in other parts of the world it is… so why don’t we have that culture in Singapore? I have had a serious problem and waited for 20 minutes and watched 40+ cyclist go past me until finally one stopped and asked me if I needed help (Thanks Martin!). Anyway let’s get in the habit of carrying an extra tube and extra co2 just in case we can find someone who needs them! And also let’s get in the habit of asking fellow cyclists on the side of the road if they need any help…now that’s Respect!
It is important to be well-hydrated when training for the ride, as dehydration can affect your performance.
Dehydration leads to poorer muscle endurance and weaker mental strength, resulting in fatigue and poor coordination. You should keep yourself hydrated during exercise to achieve the best results.
It is recommended to drink plenty of fluids before, during and after the ride to prevent any signs of dehydration or heat stroke.
Before Your Ride:
During Your Ride:
After Your Ride:
Once you have finished the ride, continue drinking for 2 to 4 hours after your ride to fully re-hydrate
Drink the right fluids
Caffeine-containing drinks such as sodas, tea and coffee as well as alcoholic beverages are not considered beneficial rehydration choices.
Opt for drinking sports drinks in addition to water; they can fulfill your fluids and carbohydrate needs after the ride.

Dehydration leads to poorer muscle endurance and weaker mental strength, resulting in fatigue and poor coordination. You should keep yourself hydrated during exercise to achieve optimal results from your training.
You are recommended to drink adequately before, during and after the ride to prevent heat stroke which is common when cycling in Singapore's hot and humid weather climate.
Using the following sweat loss calculation method, you can develop a hydration plan to ensure you drink enough in preparation for the ride. The amount you consume should be about 1.5 times the sweat loss to restore the fluid balance.
After the ride, you should be drinking 1500 x 1.5 = 2250ml of fluid.

Caffeine-containing fluids such as cola drinks, tea and coffee as well as alcoholic beverages are not considered ideal rehydration choices as they increase urine loss.
Opt for sports drinks as they can fulfill your fluids and carbohydrate needs after the ride. Nutritionists recommend a 50g carbohydrate intake post workout to replenish the loss during exercise. Feel free to treat yourself to palatable, cool and flavoured sports drinks as you’d be encouraged to take more fluids.

After Your ride
Riding with a group is fun, a great way to train and a real motivator to get you out of bed on those dark (wet) mornings! It is also potentially dangerous. There are more accidents caused by bike on bike collisions than for any other reason. In this article, Dillon Wood Head Coach at Metasport gives you some pointers on how to stay safe and have fun.
Before you join a group
Make sure your bike handling skills are well practiced so that they are ‘second nature’. For example…
These are all skills that are required for serious group riding and the best way to practice them is to go out with a friend you can trust, or join a group like MetaSport for their weekly training sessions and clinics.
Drafting
The most important skill that you will need to practice before riding with a group is drafting another rider’s rear wheel. First, find a buddy that you can trust and who can maintain a constant and smooth speed... (for ever!)
Riding with a group
Once you feel confident enough to go out and ride with a group, there are certain ‘rules’ and ‘cycling etiquette’ that need to be observed to keep everyone safe and happy. Here are the main ones.
Leading a group
There is nothing wrong with staying at the back of a group while building your experience, confidence and skill… in fact the stronger riders will appreciate your honesty as it will give them a longer spell at the front (let the group leader know what your intentions are before setting out)! Once you feel confident enough to take a spell at the front of the group, remember the following:
Enjoy your transition to group riding and if you need any more information contact Dillon@metasport.com
Before or after your ride, join the Carnival at the F1 Pit Building for some great entertainment - there will be something for everyone so bring your family and friends!
Food and drinks will be available during the event:

The Cycle of Hope is OCBC Cycle Singapore 2013’s new programme to drive funds and awareness for our four official charities. Two separate segments will fall under The Cycle of Hope programme at OCBC Cycle Singapore 2013:
The Business Times Charity Challenge will take place on Sunday morning, as a component of The Challenge. It will be open for both teams and individuals to register.
This category will provide cyclists with the opportunity to ride for a good cause. Individuals or teams of four will donate a portion of their fees to our selected charities.
The registered participants will ride in a special wave in The Challenge (39km) on Sunday morning, while they will also have access to the SWW VIP Lounge and F&B on Sunday, and will receive customized Business Times Charity Challenge bibs.
To register a team of four or as an individual, the participants must first sign up via Simply Giving (URL to be provided) and make the assigned donation via their fundraising platform.
Upon receiving the donation, Simply Giving will issue the team or individual with a registration code which they then use to register on our event website and make no further payment.
During the registration process, participants can choose to direct their donations towards one of two charities: Dover Park Hospice or SingHealth Transplant
The Parade of Hope will take place on the Friday night before the Professional Criterium.
Capacity: 200 cyclists
50 representatives from each of the four official charities will be invited to take part in a 30-minute ride around the F1 Pit Building as the large crowds gather in preparation to watch the elite cyclists in action.
Entry will be handled by invitation only
Singapore Children's Society was established in 1952 by a group of concerned citizens and expatriates to help sick and malnourished children. For close to 60 years, the Society's services have evolved to meet the ever-changing needs of less-fortunate children. Today, the society helps disadvantaged children, youths and their families through 59 programmes and 9 service centres that are spread across Singapore. In 2010 alone, Singapore Children's Society reached out to more than 57,000 children, youths and families.
Singapore Children's Society has been fulfilling a pivotal role in improving the lives of their beneficiaries. They are an independent and non-profit organisation that relies on public support for their programmes. The Society runs Sunbeam Place (a residential home for abused and neglected children), before-and-after school care centres, after-class drop-in CABINs in 18 neighbourhood schools, a toll-free children's helpline (Tinkle Friend Helpline), counselling and developmental programmes, public education and more.
Your kind donation will help improve the lives of over 57,000 needy children, youths and their families; allowing Children's Society to fulfil its mission of bringing relief and happiness to children in need.

Touching lives & hearts through hospice care.
Not many people realize that we all embark on our journey towards death from the very moment we were born.
Yet ironically, while the birth of a child is often anticipated and planned, the preparation for the final days of life is frequently neglected, and sometimes even ignored, despite having a whole lifetime to come to terms with it.
These final moments, for the people concerned and those close to them, can be traumatic. Yet, if they can learn to cope with this stage of living, the quality of life in a person's last days can be vastly improved.
Dover Park Hospice (DPH) was founded in 1992 as a secular, non-profy organization to meet the growing need in Singapore for hospice care for terminally-ill patients.
Open to everyone regardless of age, race, religion, or income level, DPH is dedicated to meeting the unique physical, emotional and spiritual needs of those who are nearing the end of life's journey.
The goal is to enhance the living, comfort the dying and support the grieving with compassion and dignity. At DPH, Every Moment Matters. Since opening its doors to the first patient in 1995, DPH had brought care and comfort to more than 7,500 terminally-ill patients and their families through a programme of active and compassionate service.
Dover Park Hospice provides temporary relief for distressing physical or psychological symptoms and issues, especially in the last phase of life when care at home is not possible.
We accept patients:
Facilities / Patient Activities:
Training and education continue to be a core emphasis for DPH. The hospice plays host to nursing students, medical trainees and interns from related fields such as music therapy, counseling and art therapy. The hospice is a training site for various teaching programmes organized by educational institutions such as ITE, polytechnics and the universities.
DPH also conducts weekly journal reviews as well as in-house tutorials for medical officers twice a week in addition to organizing the SNB-accredited Certificate Course in Palliative Care Nursing and Introductory Course in Palliative Care Nursing.
Reviews and research were carried out to monitor patient symptom, psychosocial status, casemix and caregiver satisfaction so as to improve the effectiveness of care.

In Feb 2011, we started catering in a limited fashion to the patients discharged from our hospice home. Working with the Ministry of Health, we intend to expand on this to cater to a larger pool of patients.
This will be a 24-hour support service which caters to patients who choose to stay at home. We will assist patients and their family to cope with their deteriorating condition. Home Care is committed to help the patients and their families adjust physically, mentally and emotionally, with the loss of health and independence.
